National Mushroom MONTH

Oh joy. September is National Mushroom Month.

Here. You can have mine. I only need a couple of small raw ones for my salad.

For good measure, here's an interesting recipe from "Food-Nepal.com": http://www.food-nepal.com/recipe/R039.htm (That's where the picture came from, too.)

Enjoy!

National Chocolate Milk Shake Day

You read it here ... September 11th, besides marking the anniversary of the horrific attack on the U.S. in 2001, is also National Chocolate Milk Shake Day!

My personal favorite? Dairy Queen's Hot Fudge Chocolate Malt.

Try one. You'll like it!

National Date Nut Bread Day

According to Hungry Girl (http://www.hungry-girl.com/) today, September 8th, is National Date Nut Bread day. I can celebrate this one for sure -- I'm a date "nut" myself from waaaaay back.

As a child, we had date palms lining our driveway (just look how lush those dates look, dangling from that tree). Once a year (if I recall correctly), Dad would harvest those dates and Mom used them year-round in breads, cookies, salads, and no telling what else. Have you ever tried snacking on raw dates? They're wonderful! Probably way more sugar than one should consume, but sooo tasty. And, um, lots of fiber too.

So go make some date nut bread, or some banana nut bread with dates in it, and enjoy the day. Dates are a natural snack that taste great and are great for you. It's just a nice bonus that it's FRIDAY!!!

By the way ... the photograph is from Wikipedia.

It's "Race Your Mouse Around Your Icons" Day

According to http://www.brownielocks.com/august.html, today, August 28th, is National Race Your Mouse Around Your Icons Day.

Actually, I'm not sure it's a "national" day, but that's what I'm calling it. You can call *that* "poetic license".

So ... no food pictures today, no scrumptious, bad-for-you-but-tastes-so-good food to celebrate.

It's Monday, and with nothing better to do, I suggest you get to racin' that mouse!

Hmmm ... I wonder how many calories one can burn by doing a one-handed race? And you guys out there -- DON'T ANSWER THAT.

It's National Banana Split Day!

That's right, folks ... August 25th is National Banana Split Day in the U.S.A. I guess banana splits are right up there with mom, apple pie and baseball for a lot of folks.

Personally, I never could understand the attraction. Ice cream on a banana? Why ruin a perfectly good banana, or a perfectly good bowl of ice cream, by putting them in the same dish? And then, as if that wasn't bad enough, they go and put three different flavors of syrup on the ice cream. Three flavors that don't go together! Eeeeeuuuuuwwwww.

I guess I'm a purist when it comes to certain foods. And I never did like different foods touching (and contaminating) each other. I don't care that they all get mixed up together in my stomach -- it's my tastebuds I'm worried about!

It's National Peach Cobbler Day!

Don't you just love the taste of fresh, juicy peaches, still warm from the sunshine, fresly-picked? Me too!

And today is NATIONAL PEACH COBBLER DAY! So celebrate with a bowl of warm peach cobbler topped with homemade vanilla ice cream ... and think happy thoughts.

If you're watching your weight, like I *should* be doing, try Hungry Girl's low-cal peach cobbler substitute. It's yummy too, and there are some bonus dessert recipes with it. Oh happy day!
